Directional Drilling

About us:

Hydrotech's NDRC Division has been in operation since 1986. The company has offices in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman and specialises in the following:-

NON-DISRUPTIVE ROAD CROSSINGS (NDRC)

  1. Thrust Boring Works – Thrust boring from 4” to 54” diameter pipes. From single carriage-way roads of  8m wide to multiple carriage-ways of 100m wide.

  2. Directional Drilling – the latest techniques in non disruptive road crossings. Ideal for water, electrical, telephone, gas, oil and drainage lines. From 32mm to 800mm diameter pipes, and lengths from 8m to 200lm.

Thrust Boring Division

The Thrust Boring division has been very active and we are proud to say that we are one of the leading companies in this field today. At present, we have various types of boring machines to cater for different sized pipes and distances. The smaller machines handle pipe diameters of 4" to 12" usually for single carriage-way roads, while the larger machines handles pipe sizes from 6" to 54" in diameter for double carriage-way roads.

We have successfully completed hundreds of crossings using pipes of various diameters, from single carriage-way roads of 8m in length to double carriage-way roads of 100m lengths.

We have carried out works in all of the Emirates
and have encountered and dealt with different
types of soil conditions.

                        Gas Project Phase-I Sharjah

Hydrotech Engineering are one of the pioneers of directional drilling in the U.A.E. As techniques and working methods have improved, the directional drilling operation has become a major contribution to the NDRC Division.

The process generally includes three distinct phases, beginning with the drilling of the pilot hole from the surface on one side of the obstacle to be crossed. Drilling continues along a designed profile below and beyond the obstacle, to exit at the surface on the other side.

The second phase entails the reaming of the pilot hole to a diameter sufficiently large enough to accept the pipeline or conduit. Finally, the pipeline or conduit is pulled into to place within the enlarged hole. These processes are discussed in greater detail in the method statement.

There are numerous advantages of the directional drilling installation method over alternative construction methods. Environmental issues are minimised as operations are limited to relatively small areas at each end of, as opposed to the complete length of, the installation.

Normal activity for example river, highway, or airport runway traffic, can continue unhindered during installation as it is not disrupted along the surface of the installation.

This factor is especially important when drilling in residential or commercial areas. Optimum depth of cover in the design of the crossing, yields maximum protection for the pipeline or conduit and reduces long term maintenance costs.

Safety concerns associated with trenching or open cutting in rivers and other waterways, or when deeper installations are required on land, are eliminated. In most cases this method is less expensive than alternative methods, and much easier.
